Monday Update: Cycling in Autumn Weather and A Slew of Pro/ Non-Pro October Events

Hello, Everyone!

It’s another Monday and that means it’s time for a new start of the week update. There’s not much news coming out of the pro peloton this week as things start to wind down for the season, which usually ends in November.

However, there are several road cycling/ UCI sanctioned events going on until the end of the season, one of which is a famous monument. So, if you’re craving more pro racing, here’s a quick list of events in October.

  • UEC Road European Championships (Slovenia) – Don’t be surprised if a certain cyclist with the initials TP shows up to race since he missed out on the Worlds.
  • Vuelta Ciclista a Venezuela (Venezuela)
  • Grand Prix El Djazir (Algeria)
  • Tour of Chongming Island (China) – Women’s World Tour
  • Il Lombardia (One of the most famous events in pro cycling, which is also a monument, and it is also known as Tour of Lombardia (Italy)
  • Tour de Kyushu (Japan)
  • Gree-Tour de Guangi (pro men and women racing in China)
  • Veneto Classic (Italy)
  • Chromo Des Nations (France)
  • CAC Road (Kenya)
  • Vuelta Ciclista Internacional (Guatemala)

And if you think the season is over for us regular event riders, then think again! There are many October events on tap for the month. Take a look below.

  • Grafton Gran Fondo (10/3, Vermont)
  • Culpeper Cycling Century (10/3, Virginia)
  • Buffalo River Gran Fondo (10/3, Virginia)
  • Cadillac Challenge Century (10/4, Maine)
  • GFNY Maryland (10/4, Maryland)
  • Mount Diablo Challenge (10/4, California)
  • Bikes & Beers San Diego (10/10, California)
  • Tour de Luke Charity Ride (10/10, California)
  • Covered Bridges Ride (10/11, Pennsylvania)
  • October Blue Streak Time Trial (10/13, Ohio)
  • Gran Fondo Hincapie (10/17, South Carolina)

  • Tour de Lincoln (10/17, California)
  • Beach City Double Century (10/17, California)
  • Tour de South Jersey: Ride the Tide (10/25, New Jersey)

Now that it’s fall and cooler weather is settling in, it’s time to pull out those cool weather accessories that will allow you to stay warm, comfortable, and functional on the bike: arm warmers, knee/ leg warmers, base layers (short or long sleeves), Vest or jacket, and neck gaiter.

Of course, with this time of year, there is a lot of flexibility in how you can dress for a bike ride. Your rides may start and end cool, but make sure to wear layers so you can remove things once the day is sufficiently warm and you start to heat up. Autumn/ fall is the perfect time of year to work on optimizing your kit for cooler weather.

So, get out there and ride and enjoy the lovely weather. Make sure to leave early and give yourself time to complete your ride before twilight hits, and always make sure you have functioning/ charged lights for both the front and rear of your bike.

Until next Monday, have a brilliant week, and keep on cycling!
