You would think that, to build high-performing bicycles, a company would need to have developed its expertise inside the cycling industry. That the builders would need to be enthusiastic cyclists, or at least former bike racers, looking to solve a problem that exists among other bikes on the marketplace.
But that’s not the case for XDS, a Chinese bike builder for over 30 years. With its X-LAB brand, the company builds bikes designed by engineers from the ground up, then creates its own componentry in-house to keep its prices competitive and affordable.
About XDS and X-LAB Bicycles
It’s not surprising that a country known for its ingenuity and engineering that built something as sprawling as the Great Wall could also build high-end bicycles. In fact, XDS was founded in 1995 by an engineer in Shenzhen, China, whose desire to build bikes didn’t stem from a great love of bicycles or passion for the sport of cycling, but from “technical curiosity” and the science behind the materials to build them.
Apparently, this approach was successful. XDS became a huge business exceeding 15,000 employees, four production hubs, and the ability to produce over 10 million bicycles a year. It was from this background that the company decided to go one step further and create bicycles from high-performance materials, specifically carbon, with an offshoot company called X-LAB in 2022.
The Reason X-LAB Was Created
XDS’ X-LAB was meant to be a research & development brand with one goal: to take performance bicycles to a new place by applying what it sees as “decades of advanced carbon and alloy expertise.” And it does this at its main factory, where it employs 1,800 people and has 200 R&D engineers on staff.
In addition to bike frames, the company’s in-house brand Branta also produces “…forks, seatposts, handlebars, and wheels. Advanced automation, over 100 precision CNC machines, and rigorous strength and stress testing ensure exceptional accuracy, durability, and consistency…”
Last Thoughts
With only four years invested so far, it seems XDS’ X-LAB has a bright future ahead. Obviously, the company is well-funded and has a strong R&D department, so the sky’s the limit. While its road bikes are its main focus, X-LAB also produces electric bikes, city bikes, and gravel bikes.
XDS’ X-LABS sponsorship of the UCI World Tour team Astana is giving it high-profile exposure in the pro peloton and the cycling industry. The company states in its media kit that it applies its engineering, though, to every bike it makes, so if you choose an X-LABS bike, you can count on a quality build worth your time and money.
