Limburg is an eastern province in Belgium. Dutch is the primary language but French and German are also spoken there. Overall, the area is considered a region of the Ring of Flanders. It is an hour from Brussels and not far from the German border.

What are the European Road Championships?

The European Road Championships started in 1995. It consists of a road race and an individual time trial. Those two events are geared toward both men and women U23 riders (under 23) and Elite riders who have been competing since 2016.

The “Championships are open to riders selected by their national cycling governing body. They compete in the colours of their country.” The winners are given a special jersey they can wear all season.

The Best of Limburg Pre-Race Ride

The Best of Limburg (also known as the Proximus Cycling Challenge, one of the sponsors of the event) occurs on September 8th, three days before the European Road Championships begin. It allows cycling enthusiasts to ride the route used during the road race portion of the championships.

The Course and Costs to Ride The Best of Limburg

The ride is open to everyone from the hardcore roadie to the casual rider. According to the event website, cyclists “…will explore the road race course. All distances will take you to Haspengouw where you will explore the Limburg Loop. With the cobblestones of Manshoven and Op de Kriezel and the climbs of Kolmont and Zammelenberg, you will test your legs…”

There are four courses and distances that cater to riders of various skill levels. They are 20 kilometers, 50 kilometers, 70 kilometers, 110 kilometers, and 145 kilometers. This is a very inexpensive ride to participate in. Fees start at 11 euros and only go as high 22 euros for the 145 kilometer ride.
