Are you experiencing discomfort or pain in your neck, knees, or back during your bike rides? That usually means that something in your bike fit is out of alignment. And even if you’ve had a bike fit done before, factors such as your weight, age, and overall mobility can impact your comfort and performance.

Professional bike fittings, however, can be expensive, time-intensive, and require that you schedule an appointment ahead of time with someone. And that’s if you can find someone where you live (or even close by) who does it and has a good reputation. MyVeloFit eliminates these inconveniences by allowing you to record and upload a video at home, which is then analyzed using AI at an affordable price.

Who Is MyVeloFit?

Essentially, MyVeloFit utilizes specialized AI software to analyze a personal video you can record at home and then upload to its website, which critiques your current riding position. The software takes into consideration all the same elements a professional bike fitter would use, such as a mobility assessment, your riding goals (racing, enthusiast, adventurer, etc.), and suggestions for adjustments to your bike.

MyVeloFit began in 2020 and is the brainchild of Jesse Jarjour and Justin Goulding who have many years between them of bike fitting and cycling industry experience. They say their software gives cyclists a “detailed, accurate, video based bike sizing and fitting with no specialized tools, equipment or knowledge.

The MyVeloFit Process and Mobility Assessment

The key to an accurate and useful bike fit is an analysis of how you move off the bike. MyVeloFit calls this a mobility assessment. And it is part of your overall bike fit analysis, which you will also record and upload to the company’s website.

The mobility assessment examines your upper and lower body movement. You may be asked to perform some basic bends and stretches before recording your on-bike video. After that piece is complete, the process for recording yourself while riding your current bike setup is fairly straightforward.

  • Put your bike in a trainer
  • Record your video with a phone or tablet
  • Use a tripod, ask a friend, or use some other way to hold your device steady while you ride.
  • Create an account on the MyVeolFit website, select pricing, and upload your video.
  • Receive your analysis and make adjustments.
  • A 15 second video of your riding position is all that is needed.

You can choose the “Starter” level, which is free. This level includes your Single Rider Profile, Single Bike Profile, One Fit Upload a Week, a Quick Mobility Assessment, and a Basic Fit Analysis & Recommendations.

Your second choice is called “Enthusiast” and is a paid subscription level. Your last choice is called “Pro” and is a paid annual subscription level. For $75.00, it includes all the elements of the two-week subscription, but it gives you the ability to create Unlimited Bike Profiles and to do Unlimited Fit Uploads. Both the two-week and annual subscriptions come with a “30-day Better Fit Guarantee” if you don’t feel your cycling experience has improved as a result of using the MyVeloFit Service.

A Note of Caution About Bike Adjustments After Receiving the MyVeloFit Analysis

After you receive your analysis back from MyVeloFit, you may be required to make minor adjustments to your bike (maybe many times). That means you’ll need to be comfortable with working on your bike and have a proper set of tools to make adjustments, something all cyclists really should have and know how to do, anyway. These adjustments could involve any of the following.

  • Adjust your seatpost, either raising or lowering it then setting your screws with the proper torque
  • Adjust your saddle position by moving it forward or back and checking its tilt. Ideally, you’ll want the nose of your saddle to be level with your handlebar stem.
  • Adjust your handlebar height by adding or subtracting headset spacers. That means you’ll need to feel comfortable with removing your stem and handlebars to access the spacers.
  • In the most severe case, you may even need to install a new stem and handlebars, then install the stem faceplate and torque it to the right specification in Newton meters.

All these adjustments can sound a bit intimidating if you’ve never done any kind of maintenance on your bike before, but they really are not all that difficult or complex. You will need a set of bike-specific tools and to place your bike on a trainer or a bike stand. Don’t just lean your bike against a wall because that can lead to inaccurate adjustments.

And it’s a good idea to have a torque wrench on hand when tightening screws, which all have a set specification, usually in Newton Meters. If you don’t feel comfortable with making any of the adjustments listed above, your best bet is to take your bike to a shop and have a mechanic do them for you.

A proper bike fit is essential to your overall comfort on your bike. It will greatly enhance your performance and enjoyment of the sport of cycling. Sometimes, in order to get your fit right, only minor adjustments to your bike setup are needed. But sometimes it can require more than a basic adjustment.

When you buy a new bike (at a bike shop, a big box store, or online), chances are you won’t get a proper assessment of sizing. Many times, a shop will fit you with a bike based on your height and the type of riding you want to do but not much else. That’s where a professional bike fit can come in handy, especially if you are having discomfort while you ride. MyVeloFit makes bike fitting easy, affordable, and fast for any type of cyclist.
