Are you the type of cyclist who enjoys the challenge of riding lots of miles every day? Do you like camping out with other cyclists, meeting new people, and indulging in a party atmosphere (think Ragbrai, the annual ride across Iowa in the United States)? Then, the Great Vic ride across Victoria, Australia is an event you should add to your list.
All About the Great Vic Ride

The Great Vic event occurs every year in Australia’s summer in November. The event started in 1984 and 2024 marks 40 years of touring Victoria, Australia. The Great Vic is sponsored by the Bicycle Network, a bicycle advocacy group with the goal to get more people off their sofas, out of their vehicles, and onto bikes.
The event lasts 9 days. In addition to lots of cycling each day, participants camp out along the route each night and are treated to great local food, craft beer, and entertainment. The Great Vic is a fully supported event.
What’s Included In The Price for the Great Vic

Registration for the Great Vic event includes a lot of amenities, although the cost is high. For 130 Australian dollars per day (around $85.00 U.S. dollars), you receive full event support.
So, while the cost for this event is expensive no matter what part of the world you are from, it’s nice that you get more than a T-shirt at the end. That said, here’s what’s included.
- Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- A reserved camping spot for each day of the tour
- Luggage transfers
- Full route support
- Nightly entertainment and more
Ride Options and Registration Cost

The Great Vic event has three ride options. The main event is, as already mentioned, 9 days. Participants ride 72 kilometers each day (about 45 miles). At 130 Australian dollars a day, the total cost for the event is 1,170 Australian dollars (a little over $770 U.S.).
If riding all days 9 days of the Great Vic is a tad too ambitious for you and, perhaps, too costly, there is a 5 day and a 3 day option to choose from. Just keep in mind that the 130 Australian dollar cost is the same for all three options because of the logistics involved to organize an event like this.
Last Thoughts

The Great Vic looks like a wonderful event in which to participate. If you aren’t from Australia (and even if you are), it’s a unique way to see a part of the country that lots of people probably don’t get to experience.
And if you are used to doing multi-day rides with camping, rides like Ragbrai and others, then you would be right in your element registering for this event. While the cost is a bit high if you choose the 9 day option of the full event, it is most certainly one you will always remember and can tell your kids about once you are old and supple.
