If you’re a cyclist or even just a fan of good movies, then you might know the 1985 movie American Flyers. Without going into a lengthy plot summary, suffice it to say it is a movie about cycling and bike racing.

In fact, it’s one of the few commercial movies where cycling features as the main focus. The roads used in the movie and an classic race from the 1980s called the Coors Classic are the same roads you can ride at the Copper Triangle event in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Brief History of the Coors Classic

In American Flyers, a reference is made to the Coors Classic. Over its 8 year history from 1980 to 1988, it eventually became a two-week stage race. The race would cross through Colorado.

The Coors Classic became so well-known that it drew teams from around the world. It was considered the fourth largest race next to Le Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta Espana. The race was sponsored by Coors Brewing, which is a Colorado-based brewery.

Why Is The Ride Called The Copper Triangle?

The event is called the Copper Triangle because it starts at the Copper Mountain Resort. Over 79 miles and three climbs of 10,000 feet or more, the ride ascends three mountain passes that make up the triangle: Freemont Pass, Tennessee Pass, and Vail Pass. The total elevation gain hits 6,500 feet.

Registration for Copper Triangle

The Copper Triangle event takes place on August 3, 2024. If you haven’t registered yet, keep in mind this event is limited to 2,500 participants. This ride is sponsored by the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease and a donation is made when you pay your fees.

Davis Phinney, by the way, was a pro cyclist in the 1980s. He was a member of the 7-11 team. That team is, in fact, one of the cycling teams that make an appearance in the American Flyers movie.

Cost and What’s Included for the Copper Triangle Event

The cost for the ride is $200, which includes a commemorative jersey. If you want to save $20, you can choose the $180 option. That price point includes a technical tee shirt. A price increase occurs if you decide to register on the day of the event, but the adjusted price on the website looks incorrect.

In addition to the jersey or tee shirt, here are the other things included with your registration fees.

  • Bike plate & bib
  • Amply stocked aid stations with healthy and energizing refreshments
  • Post-ride Celebration to include lunch, beer garden, expo and entertainment
  • A chance to win valuable prizes

The Copper Triangle event definitely looks challenging. It will certainly test your climbing mettle and your skills on the bike. This isn’t a cheap ride by any means, but how often do you get the chance to ride the roads used in a well-known movie in one of the most epic and beautiful parts of the United States?

If you live close by or traveling and you’re seeking out a ride with a connection to cycling history, then you should register for this ride. It looks amazing. But if you can’t get in on the ride this year, there’s always next year. This is an annual event.
