The Vikings were a Scandinavian people who explored and settled in northern Europe via their longboats (pictured). Scandinavia encompasses the countries of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland. The Vikings were active during the 8th to the 11th centuries, although their wanderings expanded into southern Europe and even North America.
If you have a penchant for European history, specifically the history of northern Europe and the exploits of the Vikings, and you’re a cyclist, Denmark hosts a summer event called the Viking Gran Fondo that may be of interest to you.
History of the Viking Gran Fondo

The Viking Gran Fondo is organized by the DGI (Danish Sports Association) to promote outdoor exercise in Denmark and has been going on since 2012. It is an annual event that occurs in late June and takes place in Viborg, Denmark, one of the country’s oldest cities. It gives participants the chance to explore the regions and villages once settled by the Vikings.
Or, as the organizers of the event state, cyclists will “ride along the natural ridge that was formed through Jutland during the last ice age. Here, an ancient road – Hærvejen – has, over the centuries, helped migrants, pilgrims, merchants and Vikings stay dry as they made their way up through Denmark.”
The gran fondo, an event traditionally for just road cyclists, the Viking Gran Fondo is open to road, mountain, and gravel riders.
Viking Gran Fondo Routes

Unlike your typical gran fondo that has three routes, the Viking Gran Fondo has 17 routes designed for road riders, mountain bikers, and gravel riders. It attracts over 7,000 participants and raises over 0ne million kroners for charity ($154,019). The road portion of the gran fondo is also known as “L’etape Denmark” and is a race.
Road cyclists can choose from a stunning 5 routes. The main ride is 300 kilometers in length (186 miles). The other routes are 160 kilometers (99 miles), 125 kilometers (77 miles), 75 kilometers (47 miles), and 50 kilometers (31 miles).
Registration, Cost, and Other Information

The DGI says the gran fondo “presents a fascinating mix of physical challenges for your inner Viking, historical sights and beautiful landscapes at every turn of the pedals.” It says the 300 kilometer ride is very hilly with 2500 meters of elevation (8,202 feet).
Additionally, DGI states that “The routes also offer [participants] plenty of opportunities to enjoy the ride with beautiful landscapes and our famous feeding stations.”
Registration for the Viking Gran Fondo is open now and is currently 780 Danish Krones ($120) until the beginning of June. After that time, the registration price will increase to 975 Danish Krones ($150).
No mention of inclusions for registration, but cyclists can buy an event kit (jersey and bib shorts), and, as mentioned, take advantage of the event’s famed feed stations along the routes.
