If you’ve been a cyclist for a long time, you may have a stable of bikes in addition to your current carbon road demon. If you’re looking for a reason to pull out your road bike from the 1980s and put it to some good use, you may want to sign up for the L’Intrepida in Tuscany, Italy.
What Is the L’Intrepedia?

L’Intrepida is Italian for the word intrepid, defined as someone who, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is “fearless; undaunted; daring; brave.” 2024 marked the 12th edition of the ride which began in 2012. The event takes place over three days and is held in the Anghiari, a town in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy.
Over the proceeding years, the L’Intrepedia has gained popularity. 1020 cyclists participated in the 2018 edition of the event. The event is a non-competitive bicycling event that has three different routes (classic 42 km (26 miles), long 85 km (53 miles), and intrepid 120 km (75 miles)). In other words, it is a cycling event with the same parameters as other rides but with one big difference.
Rules And Other Information About the L’Intrepida Event

The major difference between L’Intrepida and other rides is that participants must ride bikes built before 1987. They also must wear cycling clothing from that era. To get even more specific, the event website states cyclists must use “…a steel frame, the gear lever on the down tube of the frame, pedals with toe clips and straps, and the brake wire on the outside of the handlebars.”
The roads used for the event consist of 40% dirt roads. The event website states that refreshments are based on “old style, traditional” foods. Once the event concludes, a classic lunch will be served based on “Anghiari’s famous bringoli pasta.”

L’Intrepedia is open to cyclists 15 years and older and will close once 1,000 cyclists are reached. All cyclists, regardless of which course they choose, must present a medical certificate stating they are physically able to participate in this event.
